The biggest mistake I see when people are shooting their own product photography is the distracting background. You want your product to be the centre of attention.
So get your product on a plain background or at the very least a background that isn’t too distracting.
Here at the The Biz Photography we do a lot of product photography where are often asked to deep etch the product out. To clarify that is so it can be placed on another background which is typically screen white.
The process of deep etching requires selecting and cutting out the subject from it’s original background. This is done through image editing soft wear such as photoshop. The key to making this easy is to shoot your subject on a contrasting background.
So when you plan to shoot your product range consider that you or someone else will have to etch out the background. Obviously you want to make it quick and easy for you or the company that you are out sourcing it to. Deep etching services are typically charged out by the hour or at a degree of difficultly rate. So it makes sense to make it as easy as possible for them to achieve the desired results.
Recently we did a shoot for a wholesale company called Barefoot Gypsy. The client contacted The Biz Photography wanting high quality product photography. She was happy to take care of the deep etching herself. Below are a few examples of shooting the product shot on contrasting backgrounds.
So the next time you reach for your camera or phone have a look at the background.
May your business be awesome
